An all-black kitchen stands out against the otherwise white and concrete interior of this minimalist Toronto penthouse, designed by Canadian studio GH3. The 153-square-metre (1,650-square-foot) duplex condominium in downtown Toronto is located in an early 2000s building, which GH3 stripped back to its bare essentials.

The team revealed the original cast-in-situ concrete structure, and used a pared-back material and colour palette to create a “refined backdrop” for the owner’s art collection. “The space is reinterpreted through a restrained, rigorous logic that highlights the inherent beauty of its construction,” GH3 said.

The majority of the sculptural interventions are completed in white, while select elements are rendered in black. “Interior program zones are articulated through these tonal finishes, with black surfaces absorbing natural light and white surfaces reflecting it deeper into the space, manipulating light to shape the atmosphere and experience of the unit,” said GH3.

The lower level includes a primary suite and two flexible rooms, laid out as a series of white volumes around a central hallway. A white Corian staircase emerges on the dual-aspect upper level, and acts as a divider between the kitchen on one side and an open living space on the other. Above, a small skylight is cut out of the gently angled concrete ceiling, while glass balustrades wrap the stairwell opening.

Inset into a white wall is a recess used for storing office equipment, with black lower cabinets and wooden shelving that matches the flooring throughout. The entirely matte-black kitchen is tucked into a niche opposite, and is accompanied by a thin, double waterfall island and matching circular stools.

“The space reads as complete and autonomous, while remaining visually connected to the rest of the room,” GH3 said. Off the kitchen, an all-white powder room features a curved-edge basin and a mirror with rounded corners, softening these elements against the stark white interior. From the living space, large sliding glass doors open to a terrace with lounge furniture and a grill, enjoying a panoramic view across the city.

“Wherever possible, existing conditions are leveraged and transformed into opportunities for enhancement, resulting in a space that is highly functional and visually cohesive,” said GH3. “Through subtle reconfiguration and refined detailing, the project achieves a rigorous, adaptable, and light-filled environment that elevates the spatial experience of the apartment.

” Across Toronto’s growing collection of high-rise towers, there are plenty of penthouses with stellar views. Another similar residence, recently renovated by Reflect Architecture for a music producer, was longlisted in the residential interior (large) category of the Dezeen Awards 2025.

From sushi, Singaporean food, and, of course, tacos, restaurants in Mexico City have it all. For this week’s lookbook, we dive into restaurant interiors in the city that utilise formal innovations and materials to showcase its world-class cuisine. With the city’s art week just having passed, Mexico City art and design are front and centre.

The eight restaurants below, opened in the last four years, showcase not only the beauty but the rigour of design in the city around something taken very seriously food. But it’s not all tacos and terracotta; these restaurants vary in materials, styles and location, showing the breadth of style in the metropolis.

This is the latest in our lookbooks series, which provides visual inspiration from Dezeen’s archive. Local studio Locus designed this Singaporean food restaurant to fit into a concrete-framed space at the base of a mid-rise building.

Remarkably, the studio managed to use 50 per cent recycled materials for the interior, which features built-in wood elements as well as screened-in dining spaces. This taco restaurant in the city’s Roma Norte neighbourhood was decked out by local studio RA! in thousands of tile shards a homage to the chef Alexis Ayala’s time spent in Barcelona.

The compact space is centred by an open kitchen hemmed in by a steel-topped bar and a green, ribbed material, with the scheme inverted to shroud the venting elements above. Find out more about Los Alexis This fast-casual restaurant is devoted almost entirely to the Milanese dish and features overlays of green metal and mesh throughout from the sides of the bar to the extensive shelving.

Modernist-style tubular chairs with beige and olive leather reflect the colour scheme of the space, with mirrors lining the walls to create visual expansion. Find out more about Órale Milanga Ninyas by Ignacio Urquiza and Ana Paula de Alba The design scheme for this restaurant fuses its two main offerings, steak and sake, mixing Japanese and Mexican sensibilities.

To find a commonality, the designers relied heavily on stainless steel. Wooden stools were given stainless-steel footrests, and an earthy red floor provides contrast. Two gabled volumes covered in polycarbonate panels on an infill lot create soft light for this recently opened Mediterranean restaurant in the city.

The studio kept the main dining space open and lined it with cinder block and brickwork that showcases various construction techniques. The design in this tall-ceilinged space was implemented to reflect the cuisine, traditional and communal. Located in the historic core of the city, Savvia features a massive wood-topped communal table with a circular chandelier above, with the kitchen elevated to the second floor to create more space for diners.

Oku Pedregal by Michan Architecture and Escala Arquitectos One of two Oku sushi restaurants in this city, this most-recent outpost in the Jardines de Pedregal neighbourhood features teardrop-shaped dining areas partially suspended from the ceiling. The restaurant’s material palette is light, featuring pine-clad surfaces, pigmented stucco and GFRC panelling.

The space is centred on a massive concrete bar created in the shape of an inverted pyramid, reminiscent of Aztec architecture. Anastasiia Tempynska transforms former embassy into “gallery-like” Kyiv showroom

Ukrainian designer Anastasiia Tempynska has completed a lifestyle store in Kyiv where modern materials, including mirrors and tiled surfaces, were used to complement the building’s original ornate interior. The showroom for Ukrainian brand Gunia Project occupies the ground floor of a late 19th-century building located on a historic street near Kyiv’s Golden Gate.

Tempynska’s studio Temp Project oversaw the conversion of the space, which once housed the Embassy of the Republic of Panama, into a showroom for presenting Gunia Project’s clothing, jewellery, accessories and homeware. The project presented several significant challenges, including a lack of natural light and the landlord’s requirement to preserve existing features such as wooden doors, panelled walls, mahogany cabinets and decorative ceilings.

“The question was whether we could fully realise our vision create a cohesive, functional space while working within such strict boundaries,” said Tempynska. The designer’s proposal delivered a series of curated spaces aimed at reflecting the brand’s approach to reinterpreting traditional Ukrainian crafts through a contemporary lens.

“The new Gunia Project residence is a space designed to remain relevant for years to come,” Tempynska explained. “It feels more like a concept store or a gallery than a traditional showroom an elegant, welcoming environment that invites interaction. ” The project combines ornate details such as the coffered ceilings and decorative wall panels with minimalist, modern interventions that don’t distract from the brand’s products.

The store’s layout echoes the composition of the collection, with spaces dedicated to different wares. The entrance leads into a reception area featuring a small lounge and checkout, with a children’s corner tucked away at the back. To the right of the reception is a room filled with ceramics, while on the other side is the jewellery space featuring glass displays, emerald-hued cabinets and irregularly shaped mirrors suspended from the ceiling.

The central clothing area is defined by a circular lighting fixture suspended above a matching carpet and modular bench. A hidden doorway integrated into the cabinets at the rear of this space leads to a private fitting room. The store’s colour palette of greens, blues, pale pinks and beige tones is intended to evoke nature and the pastoral motifs that are a core part of Gunia’s brand identity.

Tiles used throughout the showroom introduce a tactile, handcrafted feel to some of the walls and a table used for displaying accessories in the clothing area. Mirrored surfaces in each space perform functional roles while also creating what the designer described as a series of “Instagram zones” where customers can snap selfies for social media.

The carefully preserved cabinets were modernised by replacing the existing shelves with slender metal structures featuring integrated lighting and glass back panels. Bespoke wooden furniture designed to reference traditional Ukrainian woodworking is complemented by modern pieces from brands Noom, Woo and Cegla Studio.

“Quietly magical” Toronto cafe provides family-friendly third place

Toronto firms Denizens of Design and DS Studio have created a community space in the city’s Junction neighbourhood, which offers a cafe for parents and a play area for kids within a walnut-panelled interior. The Willow Play Cafe occupies a former dive bar and caters to the growing number of young families in the area.

The space is designed to offer adults a space to unwind and relax, while their children can play and interact within eyesight, using specially designed toys and equipment. “So many of us grew up lingering in cafes, watching the world go by, dreaming and daydreaming,” said Denizens of Design principal Dyonne Fashina.

“We wanted to create a place where parents could reclaim that ritual, but now with their children beside them. The design had to feel familiar and grown up, yet quietly magical. ” Instead of leaning into the typically industrial, primary-hued aesthetic of indoor play areas, the team envisioned the cafe space first.

Walls and ceilings are wrapped in walnut panels, creating a more mature backdrop for the whimsical, colourful elements to be layered over. The service area at the front of the cafe, featuring a checkerboard linoleum floor, allows customers to order their drinks from a wavy fronted counter. Meanwhile, their kids can remove their shoes on low benches and store them in designated cubby holes underneath.

An arched portal with a keyhole-shaped cutout leads through to the compact seating area, where a floral-patterned bench runs below a red-trimmed scalloped backrest. Small circular cafe tables and vintage bentwood chairs run alongside the banquette, facing the play zone where colourful, interactive elements emerge from the millwork.

“As a parent myself, it was important that seating be integrated directly into the play area,” said DS Studio principal Dina Sarhane. “Parents should feel close to their children, not separated from them. Comfort and proximity are part of the experience. ” A willow tree provided the concept for the play area, which includes two-tone green foam steps up to a raised mezzanine hideout and a red slide back down.

An interactive wall with illuminated pegs and another pegboard of colourful cogs are also provided to keep kids entertained. “We imagined the space as if it were part of a story, where things are not quite what they seem,” said Fashina. “Like in Alice in Wonderland, the environment itself is alive. A cafe becomes a forest.

A wall becomes a game. Play is not added on. It is embedded into the architecture. ” Arched niches lead to further spaces for workshops or parties, where the walnut surfaces are paired with yellow bead details, vintage lighting and a floral ceiling installation. “We wanted everything to feel like it belongs,” Fashina said.

“Nothing is decorative for its own sake. The cafe and the play world are one. Every element serves both imagination and use. ” Denizens of Design’s previous projects in Toronto include a fast-casual eatery featuring a basketweave ceiling and a tartan-influenced mosaic floor. Other cafes with play equipment similarly integrated into the design include a space in Dalian, China, that was based around a drawing of an imaginary fairyland.

디자인은 친숙하면서도 성숙한 느낌을 주되, 은은한 마법 같은 분위기를 담아내야 했다. “실내 놀이 공간의 전형적인 산업적 원색 미학에 의존하기보다, 팀은 먼저 카페 공간을 구상했다. 벽과 천장은 호두나무 패널로 마감되어, 기발하고 다채로운 요소들이 겹쳐질 수 있는 성숙한 배경을 조성한다. 카페 앞쪽의 서비스 구역은 체크무늬 리놀륨 바닥이 특징이며, 고객들은 물결 모양 카운터에서 음료를 주문할 수 있다.

한편 아이들은 낮은 벤치에서 신발을 벗고 아래에 마련된 큐비 홀에 보관할 수 있다. 열쇠구멍 모양의 아치형 출입구를 지나면 컴팩트한 좌석 공간이 나오는데, 여기에는 꽃무늬 벤치가 빨간색 테두리의 물결 모양 등받이 아래로 이어져 있다. 작은 원형 카페 테이블과 빈티지 벤드우드 의자가 벤치형 좌석과 나란히 배치되어 있으며, 다채로운 상호작용 요소가 목공예 구조물에서 드러나는 놀이 공간을 마주하고 있다.

DS 스튜디오의 디나 사르하네 대표는 “저 역시 부모로서 좌석이 놀이 공간에 직접 통합되는 것이 중요했습니다”라고 말했다. “부모는 아이들과 분리되지 않고 가까이 있다는 느낌을 받아야 합니다. 편안함과 근접성은 경험의 일부입니다. ” 버드나무에서 영감을 받은 놀이 공간에는 이중톤 그린 폼 계단이 설치되어 높게 솟은 메자닌 은신처로 연결되며, 빨간 미끄럼틀이 내려오는 구조입니다.

L Architects overhauls client’s “last home” by revealing its original features

Ceiling board and layers of plaster were stripped down to reveal the original brickwork of this two-storeyed terraced house in Singapore, overhauled by L Architects. Located on Barker Road, the 252-square-metre house was originally built 30 years ago for a now-retired professor. Named My Last Home, the client tasked the L Architects team with executing what he envisioned to be the “final renovation” of his residence.

“This house is for a professor who was returning to Singapore for his retirement and told the team that this will likely be the final renovation for this home,” L Architects founder Lim Shing Hui told Dezeen. “I left the first meeting feeling a certain weight on my shoulders, and wondering if we could truly give him what he was looking for to design someone’s last home,” she added.

L Architects aimed to reveal the original features of the house by stripping back the layers of wall plaster and false ceiling that had been added over time. “When we first visited the house, we sensed that it was patiently waiting to reclaim its more authentic self,” Lim said. “We wanted to rediscover the original spirit of the house, which we believed had an interesting story to tell,” she continued.

The residence is organised across two storeys, with an open-plan living area, library, kitchen and study overlooking the backyard on the ground floor. This is connected by a teakwood staircase to a primary bedroom, guest room and storage room on the first floor. Across the house, the L Architects team comprising Lim, Tse Lee Shing and Loo Quan Le removed and reorganised some of the non-load-bearing walls to improve cross-ventilation.

Newly-built walls made of modern three-hole bricks were erected. On the ground floor, these were teamed with sliding doors and perforated screens to divide the common areas. While carrying out a test removal of the wall plaster, the team discovered English bond brickwork underneath, which they decided to unmask, complemented by concrete pillars and beams.

“As we removed the plaster, a lot of the mechanical and electrical items, like the old wiring and its conduits, were also removed,” explained Lim. “Upon removing these items, we start to see the grazed tracks on the walls like battle ‘scars’. We convinced our client to retain it as part of the historical story of what this house has gone through,” she added.

On the first floor, false ceiling boards were peeled away to uncover the original pitched ceiling with exposed timber rafters. Solid timber furniture was sourced for the residence, including a vintage bed and study table that had been sitting in the client’s storage for several years. Bespoke reclaimed timber benches were created for the foyer and bedroom and complemented by teak-covered built-in carpentry that is dotted across the space.

Cement screed flooring features on the ground floor, complemented with chestnut-hued timber flooring on the first floor. The tactile material palette of the residence is contrasted by stainless steel surfaces in the kitchen and exposed mechanical services, including ducts and rainwater harvesting pipes.

In the bathrooms, L Architects installed glazed subway tiles mimicking the proportions of the bricks forming the original walls. “The house must represent the current moment of when the renovation took place, resulting in a harmonious mix of both the past and present,” Lim commented. L Architects is a Singapore-based architecture office founded by Lim in 2016.

Previously, the studio used double-bullnose bricks to overhaul a flat in Singapore, for which it was named the winner of the residential interior (small) category of the Dezeen Awards 2025. Elsewhere in the country, Open Studio turned a 1960s school hall into a pickleball court and Park Associates completed Singapore’s “first multi-storey 3D-printed house”.

“이 물건들을 치우자 벽에 긁힌 자국들이 마치 전투의 ‘상처’처럼 드러났습니다. 우리는 이 집이 겪어온 역사적 이야기의 일부로 이를 보존하도록 의뢰인을 설득했습니다,”라고 그녀는 덧붙였다. 1층에서는 가천장 보드를 벗겨내어 노출된 목재 서까래가 있는 원래의 경사진 천장을 드러냈다. 주거 공간에는 고형 목재 가구가 사용되었으며, 고객의 창고에 수년간 보관되어 있던 빈티지 침대와 책상도 포함되었습니다.

현관과 침실을 위해 맞춤 제작된 재생 목재 벤치가 설치되었으며, 공간 곳곳에 배치된 티크 나무로 마감된 빌트인 가구와 조화를 이룹니다. 1층에는 시멘트 스크리드 바닥이, 2층에는 밤나무 색상의 목재 바닥이 적용되었습니다. 주거 공간의 촉감적인 소재 팔레트는 주방의 스테인리스 스틸 표면과 덕트, 빗물 수확 파이프 등 노출된 기계 설비와 대비를 이룹니다. 욕실에는 L Architects가 기존 벽을 구성하는 벽돌의 비율을 모방한 유약 처리된 지하철 타일을 설치했습니다.

“이 주택은 리모델링이 진행된 시점의 현재를 반영해야 하며, 그 결과 과거와 현재가 조화롭게 어우러져야 합니다. “라고 임은 설명했다. L Architects는 2016년 임이 설립한 싱가포르 기반 건축 사무소다. 이 스튜디오는 이전에 싱가포르의 한 아파트를 리모델링할 때 더블 불노즈 벽돌을 사용했으며, 이 프로젝트로 2025 디진 어워즈 주거 인테리어(소형) 부문에서 우승했다.
